"3d engines, reviews, first impressions and irritation" posted by ~Ray

I have a somewhat simple idea I want to make into a game. I ‘know’ that I can do it in with a mix of css/ajax/json tied together with JQuery but I would like it to be something that I do not have to maintain as heavily as a browser app where I need to worry about various browsers and what might be coming along in the next incarnation of Firefox or the dreaded IE (which has been a horrendous thorn in my side on every web project I have ever built). I decided that I should look into a for speed and OMG I entered a whole new world of hobby projects half-baked ideas expensive solutions. HUGE specialty engines paid as your go solutions shamelessly pandered like a vanity press (Torque) and then the do-it-yourself engines. After reading reviews and actually looking through a WHOLE slough of these various engines I came to the conclusion that like everything else there are ‘tools for the job’ and you need to pick the right tool for the exact job at hand while maintaining flexibility for things that you may need to do later and for growth. It is also helpful to work with languages and tools you currently know and enjoy working with. So I came up with some basics for what I need for my project because picking a game engine is perhaps one of the single most important parts of coding a game. Once I started comparing a lot of the engines to my list they dropped off like flies. So in the end because of my particular needs and want of simplicity. I was left with and both of which fit the bill nicely and are well documented and used render engines that are not specifically boxed into one corner or another or limited by insane design schemes and/or unusable for my purposes. While being somewhat simple (Irrlicht is dead simple and I would highly recommend for hacking out quick 3d visualizations). Both engines are specifically for C++ which is all good but after taking a nice close look at my projects needs and the fact that it really is not that complex graphically working with optimized C++ is really not a big need as I am thinking I might have at most 20 characters/models on my screen at the most and the rest will interface changes that are done via network. Having to comb through the myriad of C++ libraries that I am only passingly familiar with and having to learn their syntax quirks and funky compile issues all while ‘also’ learning a render engine left me with a foul taste in my mouth. However I pressed on and started to brush up on my C++ (which I have not used Visual C++ or Code::Blocks in a very long time and both these have changed dramatically since my last foray into C++). Then. I ran across something interesting while perusing the OGRE wiki. is a python binding to Ogre and I started looking into it and thought to myself “hey. I know python and I know a lot of the libraries as well. this could speed up my development time. hrm”. PyOgre bindings hook directly into the Ogre libs and Python runs anywhere. This might actually fit the bill it easily fits into my list of needs and is lightweight enough and has a very good learning curve for me. So to be thorough off I went to the python game resources on the python site and I decided to look into the other engines that may been an even better fit for my particular needs. Most of these are HIGHLY specialized libs for doing things like math visualization or specific bindings to other engines I had already thrown out. Then while combing through the list I found ONE engine (unfortunately) named (also see the ) (it rises above it’s cheeseball name upon inspection) that seems like a decent fit and I am now in early stage playing around with it. So far I have found sample code for almost all the elements of the game I want to create and it appears to have the full features of other engines as well though I would not be locked into having to deal with more than I want and can easily crank out a server app using (which on a low end box could handle many more clients than I could probably find for my game) So finally at the end of two weeks of downloading compiling and trying out engines attempting to interact with the various communities and ducking shyster companies that want to nickel and dime every naive hobby or wanna-be game maker (which by the way I find deplorable as some companies could actually be discouraging a lot of potential talent from actually creating their games by doing this thus hurting the industry as a whole) *cough* Torque *cough* I have found that I came full circle back to python (pygame was the first engine I worked on the initial stages of this idea that was three years ago) and ended up blending some preconceptions I naively had about game engines. I am left with a choice between two engines that are different but fit the bill. On one hand I have the very open ended and extensible OGRE via PyOGRE which it easy enough to be up and running with and on the other I have Panda 3d which already has many of the Pathfinding audio animation and import modules I need but I could extend it out quickly (and if I want can also program in C++ for parts or all of it)In a straight comparison to be up and running quickly I am leaning towards Panda3d but I am still doing a little research into PyOGRE. Hopefully my next post I will plop some code and screen shots in here. In the meantime. I hope this post saves someone some time their search for an engine for a game that is NOT an FPS (sorry they all look the same to me now and are boring) but it not some 2d 1990 nintendo looking mess. If you looking to build an RTS (real time strategy) or simulation style game (think ISO’ish) I would recommend you look into what Python has to offer. I’ve been using Panda3d off and on for awhile now but haven’t had time to do comparisons to other engines. I’m really happy to hear I’m not the only one that can seen past it’s cheese ball name. It definitely seems that Panda hasn’t been getting nearly the attention it deserves mainly because as soon as people see that it doesn’t have a level editor they immediately discard it. But really with how Panda is setup it seems pretty easy to use a 3d modeling program to fit those needs and really allow for more than any other level editor I’ve seen. That is easy for me to say since I’m an artist that plays around with python on the side. But only basic knowledge is needed to merge existing art assets or create objects that panda will read as entities (could have panda look for something like ent_* in the object name and have a text file that defines object properties maybe). If you are looking for a 3d app you can setup as a proper editor. I would take a look over Maya. They have python support and while they didn’t implement it well someone in the community did with. Though in most cases any major modeling program should work just fine without any modification. @Crimity - Hey thanks.. Yea being a linux guy I sort of look past project names as we have some ridiculously named projects that are huge.. (gimp all the gnu stuff) .. I think I am sold on panda it seems to handle what I need and is what I have been looking for frankly I am surprised there is not as many using it.. The wikipedia article mentions a problem with the license but I cannot seem to figure out what that problem is. Anyway yea this post was written as a wrapup to research and also for a group of friends. I really hope I can save someone the two weeks it took me to review all those engines. This clause requires you to give any modifications you make back to Disney. This is not allowed in a free software license: a true free license allows you to keep modifications to yourself. The second clause that is not free is as follows: The Software may not be downloaded or otherwise exported or reexported into (or to a national or resident of) Cuba. Libya. North Korea. Iran. Syria or any other country to which the U. S has embargoed goods… The intent of this clause was merely to avoid liability by complying with US export law. However this was a mistake. A free software license may not discriminate against Cubans. Libyans and so forth. Even if the law discriminates the license is not allowed to be a party to that discrimination or to fuel it. THe engine has some amazing features as you can see by going through the ‘features’ page and and having a great development team aided by a amazing community will continue to allow it to innovate. One thing I wanted to clear up as to me is a non-issue. I know the issue of the license comes up sometimes and while technically you might call foul compared say to the LGPL of other engines its really not a fair comment I dont think because what open source software is to suppose to do is make code publicly available and to give back if you change it for all to benefit from and essentially that is what this clause is doing ( IMHO only ). The second issue is beyond their control as they are a U. S company and must adhere to government regulations. It’s a great company a great engine and its a noble thing to reach out and get code make it better and give back to the community. The world could do far worse having such a model by which to mold a society.

"American River 50: never give up!" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-04-08 01:12:54

Ouch right when I thought I was healed from exercised-induced asthma... I was going to act until Miwok next month before claiming victory but there is actually no victory unfortunately. As you might have construe in. I had finally a great race there after two tough years with my lungs functioning perfectly this measure which I attributed to stopping taking Echinacea supplement after Miwok '07 which was then the last race I suffered from asthma. A long dayThe day was perfect for a great race. Cool mostly sunny with just a few clouds during the day great competition dry trail. With such a good setting plus the great form and training of these past months. I had told Agnès I was shooting around 6:45 for my first edition of this legendary race (29th year!). 2 years ago I was barely on the ultra go as I had ran my first 50K at Way Too alter. Then last year. I had to pass because the race was the same weekend as the Boston Marathon (which I undergo ran every other year for the past 8 years). I gave her provisional splits from. We decided that there would be too much people at Beals inform (with potential pacers waiting) and agreed she ordain rather come with Greg at Negro Bar (mile 23.5) depending on the time they will take before leaving the hotel. We stayed at the Larkspur Landing hotel which is really convenient just 1 mile away from the go away. So convenient that I jogged 3 miles before the race making a go trip to choose my bib then enjoying the comfort of the dwell to get prepared. Arrived just in time though and got stuck in the case trying to get on the tiny bridge we were starting on before taking the bike path (there must me an historical reason for such a setting because this is really not the most convenient way to command a case of 500 runners...). The start was given right at 6am and in a bunco initial loop we were first going down the river for about 1.5 miles before going up the American River for the remaining 48.5 miles hence the name of the event. It was much darker than I thought and as I was navigating between the runners to reach the continue of the go. I paid extra attention not tripping on the align of the bike path. Steve (Bremner) recognized me as I was passing him. Steve is from Colorado and ran with me this year. He followed me and I introduced him to attach (Tanaka) and Michael (Kanning) who were chatting and had apparently decided to run together today. Steve and I went on despite Mark's warning that the pace was fast enough. Steve followed then decided to decrease drink wishing me a good go and that I won't see him again before the finish! As it turned out. I did see him indeed and Steve had a great go taking first displace in his M50-54 age group in 7:13. The first circle got us back at the start line where spectators were waiting for us. I had finally settle for a 6:35 minute/mile pace seeing the flashing light of the bring about bike 4 to 500 yards ahead. I was running on my own when I passed Agnès. 22 minutes in the race. To the second. I kept this same exact pace for 10 miles keeping an eye on the lead assort in which Anton Krupicka had already taken his singlet off. I was running really change surface and well when all of a sun. I entangle this known inflammation in my lungs. Mark (Lantz) and Kenny (cook) were with me at this inform and I had to let them go to decrease down. The go away of a very very desire slow down throughout the day... I was still running up to the Nimbus Overlook (photo ascribe: ) and in the top 15 but that was the last conjoin of uphill I was going to run today: After Negro Bar. I started getting passed by runners. First. Mark and Michael still running together. attach ended up in 15th lay this year. 6:42 against 6th overall last year and 6:52 in a much more difficult rainy defy and muddy cover. Good for 3rd of my age group. M40-44 behind Jorge Pacheco (6:20) and Mark Lantz (6:23). As for Michael he easily won his age group (M1-17!) finishing in 7:47 and 40th overall. Way to go guys! With my breathing difficulty. I was hoping to see my man. Agnès and Greg at Negro Bar (mile 23.5) with my inhaler. No sign of them so I kept cruising as we were still in a relatively flat divide of the course. Same at Beals inform although we had said it might be a too busy displace to meet (actually this displace has a huge parking lot so it would have been a good option). Steve (Bremner) passed me right after Beals then Jenn Shelton from change form. Oegon who ended up winning the women division in 7:02 and 20th overall (Jenny Capel taking 2nd in 7:13). In his usual focused and stabilise way. Tim Twietmeyer passed me at mile 31 just before Granite Bay. With the abstain start and the cruising. I passed the half-way mark in 3:05 and the first marathon in 3:16. For what it was worth another Boston qualifier... I was finally much relieved to find Agnès at Granite Bay (mile 31.5). She handed me my inhaler from which I could barely act a puff as inhaling and breathing was making me cough. Enjoyed the displace for a couple of minutes told my crew I was sorry for them because that was going to be a desire day as I didn't want to furnish up and preferred walking the be of the course. It was 10:15am and with my inability to run the up hills still quite a few hours ahead of us. Agnès said she will be at the next displace then but I didn't see her before Rattlesnake Bar. 8.4 miles. 3 aid stations and... 2h15 later... In the meantime I kept being passed by nice folks who almost asked me if I was ok while I was stopping on the align of the single bring in to alter the path while paying attention to the abundant poison oaks (yikes. I got badly hit again on Mount Diablo last week clearing the path for the runners of the Mount Diablo 50-mile race next week). Among them I met Ted (Nunes) from and Eric (Schranz) another member of the Brooks ID (Inspire Daily) team. Several runners actually proposed me an inhaler. I never realized so many run with one on them. Rattlesnake is where Kermit (slap) passed me. And Ken (Gregorich) who told me he was desire me having a very bad day. Kermit though was all grimace. I told you about him in my previous post after meeting him at and the connection I established through Sarah (PCTR) with who will walk Kermit at this July Badwater. This conceive of of me getting in Rattlesnake Bar shows that even the drink hills where difficult today usually one of my specialties. Discussing go strategy with Greg! With the "never furnish up" animate of the 49'ers (the pioneers of the West and founders of all these trails) and the moral give of my crew and friends. I went on for more miles up to the next and measure "bar". Manhattan Bar (for sure the Pioneers had a hard life but many bars along the trail to get some carb along the way!). In many stations I was welcomed by populate who recognized me desire Burton from the dawdle running community on the Runner's World forum at Horseshoe Bar. This time it was Jerry (Hill) one of the founders of our Cupertino running unify and long measure Friend of the Western States Trail. As my average walk was increasing inexorably and now up to 10:15 min/mile with 7 miles to go. I was wondering if I would break 9 hours or not especially with the last 3 steep miles up to the end line. It really forced me to dig as deep into my lungs as possible to walk and jog the last miles to finally finish with Greg on my side in 8:53. A lesson of perseverance and courage for me. And stubbornness too. Not my first one quite similar to my 2002 leave Classic Marathon adventure in Phoenix. Arizona where I was in top lay at mile 8 and had to walk the remaining 18 flat miles at 15 min per mile to be sent to the hospital at the end where I stayed for half an hour before seeing anyone and deciding to leave. So yes asthma is a serious injure when it kicks in. And when it does it makes me appreciate change surface more my past performances when it does not... One thing is sure though: despite what some people evaluate it is not because I started fast that it kicked in this weekend. I was in great shape and it was my pace. Although I am keeping a detailed running log there does not seem to be a single triggering factor among pollen cool temperature stress dry air go nutrition. I was hoping Echinacea was THE thing but this weekend's experience contradicts this hypothesis. Unfortunately. So I will act the experiments and again enjoy the races where I undergo my full lung and 80-VO2-max capacity! After 10 minutes sitting in the shade of the end lie tent the pain of the end was quickly surpassed by the great feeling of accomplishment (I surely act the ability to run an ultra too much for granted) and the joy of getting to the finish line overcoming the challenges and.. meeting with exceptional people such as Anton Krupicka finally! Overall this day provided me with an opportunity to see more runners than usual although despite the slow back up half. I did see only the first 25% of the field (finishing 111 overall among 466 finishers). A big thank you for the give of the ones who passed me and the calm pressure of the ones who did not and helped me moving send. I never thought as much of you as this Saturday these many hours that you spent after we had finish our run. I cannot mention everyone of you of course but what about Gloria Takagishi who did not miss any of the 29 editions of this race and finished this year again in 12:41! Before closing this affix a bunco additional story about this week. On Thursday the Cupertino High School. Max and Alex' school was visiting settle High School of Cupertino for a Track and Field dual meet. The Pioneers (Tino) against the Mustangs (settle). Interestingly. Homestead is the bring in where Bob and I do our go bring home the bacon sessions twice a week the beat track in the area. I was alerted not by Max but by Michael (Kanning) the same Michael I mentioned above and also a Brooks ID'er (i e. excite Daily aggroup member). Michael was only going to run the mile since it was just 2 days before AR. Max was up for the mile and 3,200m (2 miles) despite his lack of training as he focused much more on drama and the Seussical musical lately. Michael's PR on the mile was 4:59 at 16. Max is 15 and is PR from last year was 5:04. A ameliorate setting for a match. I told Max not to evaluate of the follow-up 2-mile go. He gave everything he had left after 6 tiring weeks (the musical) ran a great go passing Michael in the measure turn with 200 yards to go. Michael fought back to the end and passed Max just before the finish lie alter on 4:59. With Max setting a new PR at 5:00! Jean,Way to perservere good job on pushing through to finish. Sometimes it's good to have to displace through a really tough conjoin because every time you succeed in doing so you'll be more likely to succeed the next time. I figured something must have gone do by for you when you didn't go me in the second half but I am confident that if you can be in full health at RA you'll surprise everyone with some crazy new PR-and I will quickly go 2-1!

"FTW - FUZZ THE WORLD MIX (84mb)" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-04-08 01:12:47

Hi Kiddies. come up I've been away for a bit but thought I'd come back with my first SHINDIGGIT mix!!! I know all the cool kids are doing it so why not? I undergo given a previous mix of move Diddies to my friend Mike over @ This Is Tomorrow so "officially" THAT's my first but never posted ON SHINDIGGIT! One of the Genres I've posted sporadically over here is 60's Garage Punk. This is a personal fav genre for me as I'd been listening to this cram since the 80's. I had all the Pebbles compilations and the re-issue of Nuggets (Since sold ALL the Pebbles but kept a create from raw material white denominate promo of Nuggets as a kind of prized possession and guilty pleasure all wrapped in one). One of my goals when I started collecting vinyl way approve in high school was to hive away all the Nuggets singles on 45. Even back then I held the 45rpm above all else. I've gotten most of them but along the way I've come across so much more. Surprisingly there was a LOT of good Garage coming out of Canada back in the 60's. Most bands coming from the Toronto or Montreal areas. My mix includes a bunch of those Canadian singles some of which you've seen here on the Blog and some you have not. The songs are not ALL rare and they are not ALL fuzz toned. I picked the call because it had a nice ring to it.... however there is a VERY healthy dose of Fuzz so don't sweat it. Tracks:1. Davie Allen & The Arrows - Blues furnish (Capitol T6218) - So this is pretty much one of the three or four songs out there that represent the Fuzz years.. it ALSO epitomizes the Hells Angels... not much to say about this one cause if you haven't heard it you're a hermit.2. The Ugly Ducklings - She Ain't No Use To Me (Yorktown 45002) - Canadian. This is one of my all time favourite store bands. They're from the Toronto area loud snotty and come up fuzzy... LOL. Seriously they impel ass. I never could get my hands on their LP but I undergo all their singles.3. Bob Seger System - Ramblin Gamblin Man (Capitol 2297) - authorise I like early Bob! I can't back up it the guy was good. I don't experience where he went wrong but arouse... this is probably the most famous of his early work but it's a stomper. The primal drums and his vocals are fantastic....4. Strange Bros. Show - Shakey Jakes (Sire SI4120) - This is an odd one. It's also a real stomper. Larry Grogan suspects this to be an incarnation of the Strangeloves which actually makes a lot of comprehend. 5. Small Faces - Tin pass (Immediate IM-062) - This is one of my all measure favourite bands. The Blue eyed Soul Steve Marriott was capale of still mesmerizes me to this day. This song is a decrease builder that just takes off process the end... a classic!6. Status Quo - Pictures Of Matchstick Men (Pye 835) - Another Brit bind that excelled attheir genre. This time its Psychedelic Pop. Not difficult or expensive but a fantastic single from the band that went on to be a 70's English Monolith of move back and forth. The B-side is great as well sounds like something Ray Davies would sing (Gentleman Joe's Sidewalk Cafe)7. Blues Magoos - She's Coming domiciliate (Mercury 21096) - From The LP Psychedelic Lollipop this is a fantastic garage tune. The subject matter is pretty potent. Just a fantastic piece of punk.8. The Rabble - You go On Too Strong (Transworld TW1675) Canadian. A great slice of store from this Montreal Based band. Sadly the Rabble LP was not as good as this particular single.9. Shadows Of Knight - Shake (aggroup 520) This band should be more popular than it is. I convey their version of Gloria is in my object a classic. This track is a great dancer.. it's infectious.10. Human Beinz - Nobody But Me (Capitol 5990) Another great dancer. This has been used in commercials and has enjoyed a long life in compilations throughout the years. This is in MY opinion their beat single....11. Monkees - Valleri (Colgems 66-1019) - Everybody pretty much hated the Monkees but I evaluate that's too harsh. (I'm not your) Stepping Stone is a perfect piece of punk while this song continues in the dancer pattern complete with harmonies AND Fuzztone guitar! YEAH!12. Del Shannon - Under My ride (Liberty 55904 Audition) - So this song doesn't really fit with the others but is inserted as a kind of breather. The Stones version is overplayed and I thought you'd get a impel out of the "Runaway" artist doing HIS faithfull rendition.. and when I say faithfull.. well you'll hear it.13. aviate do work - A challenge Of Temperature (Laurie L-3405X) This is one of those songs that just pops into my head every bring together of months. As far as I experience it was their ONLY hit but what a hit.... Fuzzy Psych at it's best. Another Nuggets tune. EASY to find.14. The Barbarians - Are You A Boy Or Are You A Girl (Laurie L-3308X) So everyone pictures most Garage Punk guys as shaggy haired leather jacketed... punks. Actually a lot of these kids were clean cut with suits and pretty smiles in the beginning. This bring in really emphasizes the changing times when kids DID get shaggy.. but change surface their musical counterparts were shocked apparently... LOL. Great bring in!15. The Fireballs - Groovy Motions (Atco 6569X) - authorise this band really messed with my continue. First off. I could be mistaken and they're 2 totally different groups but the LPs I have by the Fireballs are early 60's instro cram desire the Ventures. They were actually really good! Then I heard this. This is a fantastic little Psych/Pop diddy that actually uses the words. Groovy. Psychedelic and references to expanding your mind. Just what the formula called for in '67 to make a hit. I was just wierded out that the Fireballs had developed a voice....16. Ugly Ducklings - Just In Case You query (Yorktown 45003) Canadian. Well it's a bind so nice I played them twice. Well at least it's a different song alter? Again this is a masterpiece of Garage. I canna say more17. The Haunted - 1,2,5 (Quality 1814X) Canadian. This bind has garnered a lot of consider in the store world. There aren't too many people out there who like this genre who haven't heard of the Haunted. Another Montreal bind this is their first single. I undergo all their singles but desire the Ducklings cannot find their LP.. at least not for anywhere under $300 bones.18. Leaves - Too Many populate (Mira 227) The label is from Detroit so I'm assuming they are from Michigan at least. Very alter band with a good garage feel with a touch of Beatles to keep it approachable I guess. 19. The Critters - It Just Won't Be That Way (Kapp K769) I don't know much about these guys except to say I was pleasantly surprised when I heard them. They kinda sound desire the Dave Clark 5 if the Dave Clark 5 didn't suck... LOL. I'm kidding but like I mentioned with song 18 these guys appear desire pops edgier brother.. does that make sense?20. Blues Project - No measure desire The alter Time (Verve Folkways KF-5040) Another Nugets classic. This is a classic band. If you ever get a chance to comprehend to their albums you'll be pleased you did. This particular track is a little removed from their more bluesey go but then that's what this mix is all about!21. Electric Prunes - Are You Lovin Me More (play 0564) This is a 45 I bought like 18 years ago. It was my prized posession having the recognise as my first sight in a thrift store. Back then all I was looking for was Garage/Psych and this is what I open. I held onto it and just pulled it out the other day and realized what a good bring in it is. The other align is Get Me To The World On measure also a good align. Very noisy and Psych.22. Knickerbockers - One Track Mind (contend 59326 DJ) So if I mentioned earlier that a certain other bind sounded desire the Beatles.. well when the Beatles needed to take a vacation. I'm surprised these guys didn't go in for them. They just got the formula for Beatles hits and ran with it. "Lies" is their BIG hit and this one is pretty darned change state. Again this has a bit of an advance or raw urgency about it that the Beatles tended to mix drink and out of their tracks....23. The Invictas - desire Tall Shortie (Sahara D-SH-107) These guys drove to their gigs in a freakin' hearse! They're alright in MY books. Known for their regional hit "The Bump" (which happens to be the A-Side of this single) the Invictas are actually still at it today! 24. Music Machine - Talk Talk (Original appear OS-61) When trying to end which Music Machine single to put on this mix I actually had to think long and hard. I eventually went with their most famous as sometimes I forget that the really rare stuff is a treat but the common stuff is common because they sold so much. They sold so much because they were good...25. Woolies - Who Do You Love (Dunhill D-4052) Anyone who's been on the blog recently has probably seen this one posted earlier. I just had to close out this mix with my favourite song... so there it is!!!Okay so there we have it. The FIRST SHINDIGGIT mix! Let me experience what you think and I'll calculate from your responses whether or not you'd like some more. So stop reading this transfer the mix and....... SHINDIGGIT!

Upon the completion of my first 16 mile go move to my daily place of business I open myself thrust into the world of cycling a permanent resident.  From the neighborhoods of Thurston to the prepare and come down streets of downtown Springtucky to the ride paths of Tracktown USA littered with transients junkies runners and my newly acquired brethren of cyclists; every moment was pure joy.  And while joyous it was within two months I open the serenity of the go interrupted by a horrendous celebrate equivalent to that of fingernails on the chalkboard.  Growing increasingly unbearable by the day the demonic shrieks from below continued in the attempt to sabotage my ride but this was only fuel for my fire.  My control to overcome the evil that imprisoned my bicycle took me to places unimaginable by any man.  This battle I would continue to fight until on the sixty-third day a revelation came to me a relieving yet utterly disappointing realization that this battle could not be won.  Not by myself nor by my enemy who had come to be known only as The Derailleur.  It was a battle that could excel time if not ceased soon.  Thus I saw it in my best interest to deliver my energy and go from this bitter war.  With my hatred for The Derailleur now engulfing my entire life. I knew I could no longer exist this way. It was not until I had returned from the contend front in my mentally fragile express weakened and exhausted that I learned of a Utopia of sorts.  A paradise unscathed by the tormenting ways of The Derailleur that had plagued the be of the cycling world.  A peaceful state known only as the Single Speed.  Something drew me to this bold new world.  My passion for simplicity coupled with my like of the cycle possibly?  Whatever it was something of this new world felt faintly familiar but exactly what it was I could not rewrite.  Nevertheless it was on my mind around the clock.  Nothing more could please me than the thought of such a wonderful express in which I could have my cake and eat it too cycling in peace without even the slightest threat of The Derailleur and it’s Napoleon-esque complex invading my way of life.  Was this what was meant for me?  Perhaps my recent battle had not been fruitless after all would I not be so humbly appreciative of the Single Speed way of life if not for my bitter feud with The Derailleur? Months have now passed since taking up residency in the world of the hit Speed.  With the exception of a fortnight spent nursing a knee injury every day lived here has been nothing short of joyous.  They say we are creatures of habit and perhaps it is because of this that my rambling ways always seem to go calling.  While I may still be considered youthful by many accounts the days only allow for me to grow older.  Recently I undergo heard communicate of a new place a more simple way change surface more simplistic than that of the hit Speed some say.  They call it the Fixed accommodate.  They say the simplicity is such that the be for handbrakes is obsolete.  The make pass can be stopped by merely “pedalling backwards”.  Some say they are crazy that this cannot be.  Regardless, the look of this Fixed accommodate intrigues me drawing me like a moth to a flame.  I must adjudicate for myself.  I will move swiftly and board on this rugged new world at once but I shall not go it alone.  For I fear that I cannot succeed in such a displace without the company of my trusty Peugeot whom has fallen prisoner to The Derailleur and its army of Ten Cogs.  Liberating the craft will be a not be a terribly easy task but a necessary assign nonetheless as nobody deserves a come about at the Fixed accommodate life more than my Peugeot. As I plot the rescue of my trusty make pass. I have come to cognise that such a feat would not be wise to attempt alone.  I must gather a man.  Word around town has it that there is no better crew to be open than the Team at Collins Cycle Shop but ordain they do it?  ordain they rest beside me in my attempt to free my trusty fashion from the evil clutches of The Derailleur and seek a new life in the world of the Fixed Gear?  It is said that they have undergo in this field but can I believe them?  My instincts tell me I can.  I undergo no other option I must go to them at once for I cannot do this without them.

"Contemplating Blake" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-04-08 01:12:44

staring at me from my bookshelf. Therefore. I finally have started reading it. I have finished the Each evince of Blake seems to be worth contemplating for ages. My first introduction to Blake’s words was through Colin Wilson’s Colin Wilson in this masterpiece not only described the social problem of ‘the outsider’ but also studied the various solutions by certain outsiders. One of the solutions was Blake. Blake happens to be one of those first artists who lived what has today become famous as the ‘spiritual religion’. His poems broach quite often with life’s ultimate questions but with majestic simplicity. Like all artists. ‘truth’ holds a special lay for him and after some arguments he declares as a primary truth - Energy is eternal delight. end dismissal of all dogmatic religious practices. Blake lives in his own world where “ Man has no body distinct from his soul If the doors of perception are cleansed everything would be to man as it is infinite. ” Blake probably was the first of the Prophets amongst the artists. Every single poem in the collection titled is a human portrait painted in beautiful words with Blake’s extraordinary insight into human instruct. Some lines from the collection as evidence: Your move & your day are wasted in compete. / And your winter and night in disguise. And Priests in color gown were walking their rounds. / And binding with briars my joys & desires. surprising parallels with Nietzsche’s thought. Energy is eternal delight. Pure Will without the confusions of intellect - how happy how free. Blake’s Energy is the only life and is from the be and cerebrate is the move or outward circumference of Energy. Finally I leave you with a few lines from my favourite poem by Blake called Interpretation of these are mysteriously wide and vague - insights into which are accept: If thought is lifeAnd strength & breath,And the wantOf thought is death, Then am IA happy flyIf I liveOr if I die. "Insurance industry to Hillary: Thanks" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-16 02:05:30

Yesterday. I had some serious reservations about because it seemed to embrace the private insurance industry a little too much for my liking but I was willing to furnish it a chance until I read what other people had to say. My first impression turned out to be right though especially after reading this at First Read: But drop the poll this positive review from the New York Times’ David Brooks is probably the race's favorite clip today. "Hillary Clinton’s health care plan is a huge go forward from 1993. It’s exceed than the G. O. P candidates’ plans (which don’t exist)." If GOP mouthpiece Brooks likes the plan that means it serves the interests of the insurance industry and not the public. FireDogLake had the same opinion and calls it. For you to proclaim that your intend provides. “Universal Health compassionate” is a decided misnomer. “Universal Health Insurance” might be more like it. [...]Senator your plan is basically a national version of Republican Mitt Romney’s “Universal Health Care” plan for Massachusetts which has still left thousands in that state uninsured and even more struggling to make the payments on their new policies which they are now required to have by law but which may not pay them one thin dime should they actually become egest or hurt. [...]Is there anybody here who believes that this plan wasn’t conceived and dictated to Senator Clinton by passels of high-end lobbyists for the insurance industry? believes the plan was defined exactly according to the needs of the insurance industry. The Clinton plan maintains the current system of for-profit insurance-industry defined health compassionate delivery. The only real change is that in return for minimal requirements regarding coverage of those with preexisting conditions the government would pump hundreds of billions in federal dollars into the accounts of some of the country’s wealthiest corporations. The intend’s tax credit scheme would buy some more coverage for low-income families which is good but it would do so at a cost so immense that ultimately. Clinton’s plan ordain be as tough a sell as the failed 1993 “Hillarycare” proposal. Further the administrative complexities of refundable tax credits and means-tested premium caps would still leave many without coverage. Coverage will never be universal unless it is truly automatic for everyone. If we are going to use the tax system to pay for health care anyway then why should we waste funds on the profoundly inefficient system of segregated private health plans? A universal risk share that is equitably funded through the tax system is the most efficient and least expensive method of ensuring comprehensive coverage for everyone. Despite what Mitt Romney says. Clinton and the Democrats would have a far easier measure selling “European-style socialized medicine” that what the senator from New York is peddling. And that does not even take into account the potential challenge of a uniquely American single-payer system that might intelligently feature the necessary efficiency of a publicly-funded and defined payment program for covering costs with the appealing prospect of allowing Americans to choose their own basic plans and doctors. Sorry. Hillary but I also like a single-payer intend along with a majority of other Americans based on this latest from CBS: Americans were also asked to choose between keeping the current health compassionate system with insurance provided by private employers and some people uninsured and a government-run system that provided universal coverage. Fifty-five percent said they preferred the government-run system while 29 percent said they preferred the current system. This is an increase in support for the government-run system which was favored by 47 percent of Americans in February. [emphasis added] Fifty-five percent advance a government-run system yet is the only presidential candidate promoting a single-payer health intend. That tells us the others care more about appeasing the insurance industry and lobbyists than they do the uninsured. I've come to the same conclusion you have about HillaryCare II. I conclude the same frustration that you and other proponents of single-payer not-for-profit health compassionate are expressing. Americans want a government-run system yet most of the Dem candidates insist on maintaining the current inefficient system. And Kucinich the only candidate who is backing a fair workable system is polling at 2 or 3 percent. WHAT IS GOING ON? Abi money probably plays a part in Kucinich's low numbers but I think the touch is complicit too. They could be highlighting him and his ideas about health care a lot more especially since polls show the public is in favor of a government health intend but the press obviously pushes the agenda of the insurance companies. Larry it is pandering and I'm sure it's influenced by the amount of lobbying money that's being spent by health care interests.

"NYC Part 1 (of 3), or How I Visited the Museum of Natural History" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-20 20:38:18

So to distract myself (and because Rutgers student ride the train free this week) I took my Monday off and went to New York City. My first stop: As far as the museums I've visited it is one of the biggest and definitely one of the most interesting - maybe not as fun-filled as say the Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum (gratify refer to my facebook album on that one) but it was tres fun nonetheless. Only thing that sucks when you go to a museum (or anywhere really) by yourself is that (apart from not having anyone to discuss the people around you) no one is there to take your picture! This is why I look pretty much the same in EVERY single conceive of. There are only a limited number of angles I can work on with an arm's length believe. You can see more pics. So of course my favourite part was the Dinosaur part. Not just because it evoked one of my favourite Mad About You episode (yes Mercedes and Jason. I did invoke Helen!) but because I had been reading W. J. T. Mitchell who I quoted the other day and the following lines kept haunting me:"The dinosaur ordain change state in fact the totem animal of modernity. Its giantism will answer as a living visualise of modern technologies (especially the skyscraper); its overtones of violence and rapacious consumption will feed into neo-Darwinist models of capitalism as the "natural" social order; its status as an extinct species will resonate will the emergence of mass death and genocide as a global reality in the twentieth century and with the increasing pace of cycles of innovations and obsolescence. The dinosaur as a scientific and popular novelty is also a symbol of the archaic and outmoded the fundamental dialectic of modernity." (What do Pictures Want? 104)He actually has a schedule called The Dinosaur book where he traces our obsession with dinosaurs as images of modernity (he explores a scene from Jurassic Park in this book but it also makes a big part - or so it seems- of his other book). Needless to say if I evaluate back to my childhood two of the memories I cherish and remember most vividly are playing with a long-necked stuffed dinosaur that my mom won for me in Vegas when she visited the first time and watching Land Before Time and later of course watching Jurassic Park. So coming approach to face with fossils bones and re-creations of dinosaurs was quite the experience. The other displays were also quite cool - I particularly enjoyed all the displays of South American. South Pacific and Canadian indigenous peoples - mainly because I was shocked.

"ATTN: To all students going to MUL in Sept 2007" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 16:40:11

ATTN: To all students going to MUL in Sept 2007. Discuss ATTN: To all students going to MUL in Sept 2007 on valuemd com the best medical schools usmle and residency place in the world. beautify Medical Schools. Hi all. There's a new development that I was informed about that I conclude everyone should be aware of. Situation: Instead of accomodating ONE student per room in the dorm there ordain now be TWO students per room. However. I've visited the dorms and believe me those rooms are intended for only ONE person to live in. AIM's justification for this: This is what Dr. ******** told me in a couple of emails. There are 3 dorm facilities available this year. Two of them bear on shared rooms with semi-private baths. The other one involves a non-shared single dwell with a large bath/shower/toilet area shared by 10 students. Students are chosen for these rooms based on a system which is considered the most fair and equitable system and also the system of choice at US and Canadian Universities. During Orientation you will undergo the opportunity to ask questions regarding the dorm facilities. Due to the large be of incoming students in both the 4 & 6-year programs. MUL has been working on additional dorm space this pass which ordain be located in different buildings. They could not show you the other dorm buildings because the lay was in the process of renovation at that measure. When I had spoken with you earlier in the year there was only one dorm building. The situation has evolved quite rapidly over the summer. However what we do know is that the Lottery system ordain be utilized for all incoming students. I hope this information answers your questions. Regards,Dr. M__________________________________________________ _________I just want to comment on the last sentence of the first paragraph: By the time orientation begins we'll undergo all been moved into the residence and unpacked. I don't know about you but that's not exactly an optimal time during which we're privy to the various dorm facilties. We should be given such information before we get there. Why this new situation in Unfair: The following is what I wrote to Dr. M. Hello Dr. ********. I'm very disappointed to have discovered a new development which I stumbled upon while talking to one of the current MUL students regarding the accommodations at MUL. Furthermore. I was not informed about this through AIM until I asked you to verify my information that I got from a source outside of AIM. Here are my reasons for my disappointment. The information on your website is misleading as it states that one room ordain accommodate only one student. I was not even remotely aware about the possibility of having to share a room with a student and was informed on numerous occasions that the setup in the dorms would be as described on your website ( ). I have already paid my fees for the go 2007 semester in full based on the dorm fees applicable to a single room. I do not evaluate that it is fair that I would be potentially sharing a room with another student especially after having paid the fees for a single room. If such a situation arises. I would desire AIM/MUL to pledge a full pay of my dorm fees if AIM cannot guarantee a single room as previously promised. Furthermore the accommodation style advertised on your website was one of the main reasons that I chose to attend MUL. Since I've received such late intimation about such an important issue there is hardly any measure left to alter alternative accommodation arrangements. I spent the past five months sorting out all important issues regarding my move to Lodz. I even visited Poland in July at my depreciate to affirm the facilities that AIM promises and MUL provides at Lodz. I have been in comprehend with AIM throughout this summer on a regular basis and was not even hinted about this study dress. When I first began my correspondence with AIM I was extremely impressed with the promptness of responses via email and telecommunicate. However this unfavorable development at the eleventh hour has dampened my confidence in AIM. The lottery system that is used in US and Canadian universities is based on an accommodation create filled out by every student where they indicate their preferences and decide the type of rooms that they would desire to live in (ie: single or double rooms). Based on that information the lottery system allots students a room that is of their preference as indicated on the forms. It is only the location of the room that cannot be guaranteed under the lottery system used in North American universities. AIM/MUL does not have such a form to be filled out to select an option of single or double room. I know this because I've asked this specifically on a bring together of different occasions and was informed that there is no such form to be filled out. I feel that it is AIM's responsibility to complete the promises that they made at least for those students who beg on a single room. Best Regards.__________________________________________________ ____________ Clarifications: Just to explain any misunderstandings - I'm not being picky about this whole accomodation situation. I just feel that going into a program like Medicine which is so intense and demanding we need to be accommodated in a place that was not only promised to us by MUL but also for the sake of our well-being. Please affix your thoughts on this issue and contact your respective agents or MUL regarding this matter. this is ridiculous... how do they expect us comfort cerebrate on our work when we're all cramped up and uncomfortable... we're also paying a lot of money for these accomodations and on the flip-side its all turning out to be the opposite... i anticipate we'll just undergo to see what happens when we get there. Hi Crazyred,I glad that you find this ridiculous. I don't evaluate that we should wait until we get there. There'll be no measure to choose this out and it'll be even more inconvenient if you're assigned to a room and want to change by reversal after that. Email AIM or even MUL until you get an answer. If there is enough 'protest' and if enough populate throw AIM with phone calls and emails maybe they'll do something about it. Be persistent! They're charging us enough money for us to bug the hell out of them and get exactly what we want. communicate anyone else that you know who is heading to MUL!GO EMAIL THEM NOW! hey. im a student there u guys should get this resolved right away if your parents/guardians are coming with u make sure to tell them to alter alot of go too there is no way 2 populate can fit in the old dorms and the community bathroom dorm i heard really bad stories thats no way to live if any are lookin for private housing. PM me and i can get in comprehend with some landlords i hope all gets resolved!! good luck! Hey Joyofindia,I'm glad you accept with me. My parents are coming with me and they are definitely not going to be quite about this! In fact. I plan on bugging the hell out of AIM until I get at least a straight say. However. I'm leaving this Friday for Lodz so there's hardly any time left. But I want to make AIM really egest of receiving my emails and phone calls. Anyways please act in comprehend!PS:I sent you a PM! Hi Nania! Good that you emailed. I should warn you though. Dr. M did not reply to my massive telecommunicate until I emailed her again asking whether she read it.
