Twice yesterday it was brought to my attention that I haven't blogged in a while. The first was by Gwyneth and the second was by my students during my lesson on blogging. Sometimes a little guilt can go a long way. Although I've posted sporadically since my return from teaching in the city this summer. I've been very selective in my level of disclosure on the blog. In large part. I attribute this absence to my exam reading. It's been a daunting process but I'm happy to say I'm nearly 3/4 of the way through it. Given that I didn't really start reading until September. I am simultaneously pleased with and exhausted by the process. While it feels like my life is devoted to reading for exams there have been some blips on the radar of emotion and feeling. Somewhere recently I heard that humans become so busy that it's only when we feel extreme joy or pain that we know we're alive. That might be a little deep but I think there's some truth in that idea. So in reverse order here's a rundown: In November. I finally joined the choir at my church. I've been singing all my life and playing the piano since I was seven. Sitting in the audience with a critical gaze finally grew tired to me so I decided to become active. Once it got out that I am a moderately skilled pianist the music director sent me home with seven different pieces of sheet music three DVDs and two chord books. The pressure! In October I went to the Feminisms and Rhetorics conference. What a treat! I got the distinct pleasure to present on a panel with two promising scholars/friends. Our papers were all received well and afterwards Jacqueline Jones Royster sat down with us and schooled us on the true meaning of rhetoric while also reminding us why its so important that we do the work we do. I hope everyone gets to have the same warm experience. In September. I finally moved into the new place. The four month process of moving was exhausting. While I love my place enjoy the solitude appreciate the upgrade and revel in the space. I don't want to move again any time soon. In August my grandfather went into the hospital the same day I came back from teaching in the City. Being such a strong man he waited until he absolutely had to go. A few days later we learned that his cancer had returned in an aggressive form and that he would be released to go home that Wednesday. By the time I got home that Friday afternoon his condition had worsened tremendously. It would continue to do so for the following eight days while I was there. You know it's funny. During that drive home I tried to prepare myself but when I saw him I was speechless. Words just wouldn't come. Eventually though. I was able to share with him all the things I've always wanted to tell him. I guess that's when my heart began to speak. When he passed a three days after the start of the semester. I hurt but I was at peace. At least I had a little time and words. Words. I've been thinking about him a lot lately my granddaddy. This Thanksgiving was the first holiday I spent away from my family. I think it was easier for me to stay here telling myself I have to read than to go home and not see him there. The refuge of work. It such a funny thing. And on that note.. back to work.__________________________________~I have spoken~

It feels like it´s been forever since my last blog although just a little over a month has passed. Lots to tell so direct on!First. I´ll begin with the sad news. My cat. Cusuco who I had go to love despite my initial desire to ¨return him to sender¨ because of his constant mischief has died. My neighbor´s say I´m the cause because I put a ribbon around his neck which they say was the create of his 3-day disappearance. After three days of wandering around probably hungry i suspect he was led to search out food the only way he knew how rummaging in the kitchens of my unsuspecting neighbors. When he finally returned domiciliate he had been burned from scalding hot water (you make the judgement as to whether he fell into a pot as the gossip was spread or that someone got angry with him and doused him with the boiling water). I had to get the next day for Managua and the burn didn´t seem that bad but according to my neighbors the burn was severe enough that he started to comprehend from the flies landing on him and come up that´s enough details. Being that animals aren´t too high on their compassion enumerate my townspeople´s sympathy consisted of them doubling over in laughter because I was upset about a dead cat. This past week we had our annual 3-day AVC (All inform Conference). It is basically a time to get together to see old volunteers as well as meet the new ones that had recently come into country learn some new information to act back to our sites and participate in fun events like tug-of-war dodgeball the ¨who can stuff your approach with the most marshmellows¨oppose and the talent show but I am definitely glad to be approve in my site. The weekend prior a small group of volunteers and I got together to explore the island of Ometepe which is located in Lake Nicaragua (the largest lake in Central America). We spent three days there and had an amazing time. The first day we open a very generous local to give us a $15 full-day tour of the island followed up by a trip to the rodeo for the island´s patriotic festivals. The next day we headed out early to climb the Conception Volcano which is an active volcano of about 1. 700 m. (5,600 ft.). It was an amazing hike and after lots of sweating and tears (a little exageration) we made it to the top come up to 1,200 meters. To go the additonal 500 meters would have taken an additional 5 hours and it was already late. From the top we had a spectacular believe of the volcano the beautiful island of Omtepe and Lake Nicaragua. It reminded me a little of San Francisco because the fog would roll in and you couldn´t see a thing. Then the next the you know the wind carries the fog away and you have a spectucular view. Definitely worth a tour for those of your who are comfort contemplating!Right now we are in the middle of the promociones (graduations). A few days ago after the graduation mass and ceremony they had the annual graduation dance. I evaluate it was one of my more cherished events here. Before I begin to describe it I undergo to alter a special mention that out of my entire municipality the top two students in the categorise of 2007 came from.. yes you guessed it my small sleepy town. Llano Grande. It was quite a proud moment. If you are reading this. Jess one of the top was Julith. Ceasar´s daughter. Each graduate that cared to participate bought tickets for their invitees and reserved a delay at the Community House in Cuapa. I was highly honored with an invitation to this special event by a have from my town. The tables were decorated with flowers silk clothes candles etc with the common theme of a pineapple as the centerpiece filled with caramelos (candies such as suckers marshmellows etc.) sticking out of it. They also had food pop champagne and the national liquor of Nicaragua. It was a great evening and I was proud to be about to overlap this very proud moment with the graduates and their family and friends dancing until about 2 A. "Candice on the ups and downs of travel" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 20:18:27

I dislike the actual jaunt aspect of the trip. It's such an ordeal these days with all the security precautions -- more so when traveling overseas -- and there are long lines and lots of waiting around. Leaving Heathrow in London was more intense than leaving San Francisco Airport. The first surprise was that a round is now considered a carry-on bag! Greg and I each had a carry-on -- exploit was a full-to-bursting laptop inspect and his was a small shopping bag. We ended up having to squash my purse (which is not small) into his shopping bag. I like finally arriving in London and checking into our favorite hotel. We always be at the same place and I conclude at home in the neighborhood where we experience all the nooks and crannies and all the beat restaurants etc. I could find my way around those streets blindfolded. I love returning to favorite places desire the Victoria & Albert Museum. Our hotel is right across the street and we popped in to the V&A almost eveyday. (Another thumbs-up about London is that most of the museums are free.) The V&A is one of those enormous museums that you can't really do in a day so we'd just choose a dwell each day and immerse it in. I always start with the British Galleries which are superb. But one day I might only tour the silver rooms or the furnish rooms or the portrait miniatures or the textiles or medieval ivories etc. (My favorite Jewelry Rooms undergo been closed for renovation for FIVE YEARS!!! But they are scheduled to re-open next year.) I hate returning to favorite places that have changed in ways that cause them to drop off my Favorites list. The Costume Museum in clean for example which has long been a regular stop on any UK trip. It had just changed its name to the make Museum and will now devote most of its space to contemporary fashion. All of the really old and fabulous gowns and accessories they own (early 18th century dresses. Elizabethan gloves. Restoration shoes) have been put away and I was told they would only be on show rarely for special exhibits. Even the people who worked there were complaining about the change. It's hard to get a big dose of 18th century fashion anywhere these days. The V&A put most of their old pieces away several years ago. (Though I did walk across a few old favorite dresses tucked away in the South Asian galleries in cases devoted to callico and chintz fabrics.) I like stumbling upon something new or unexpected. This year we happened upon the Lord Mayor's annual parade where he drives through London in a fabulous old coach gleaming gilt and very clarify that I have seen for years on display in the Museum of London. All the city officials were in great old coaches but it was a real treat to see the Lord Mayor's instruct in challenge. Another thing I discovered (and should undergo known but didn't) is that Parliamentary sessions run late on Mondays and are open to the public. We visited the accommodate of Commons and listened to a lively European Union debate (I like how they boo and encourage and shout at each other). Then a very affect yet passionate consider on stem cell research in the accommodate of Lords (they don't seem to mouth as much... I anticipate it's beneath their dignity). I like seeing really really old buildings. One of my favorite really old places this year was the Bodleian Library at Oxford. One dwell dates back to the 1300s and several others to the mid-1400s. Seeing scholars at desks in a dwell built in the 1440s reading books of the same age was enough to make me swoon with envy. Also the night we sat in on Parliament we also got to see Westminster Hall someplace I've always wanted to tour and never have. Though the Parliament buildings (Big Ben etc) look old and Gothic they only date back to the mid-1800s. But they kept the original Wesminster Hall intact and its Gothic call is the real thing. It dates approve to the 1100s with a beautiful ceiling dating to the 1300s. I was thrilled to finally see it. Greg and I had it all to ourselves that night as the only other people there were the guards. I hate (hate hate hate!) the exchange rate. This year was the worst ever. The pound was worth $2.20. So you had to take all the prices double them then add a bit to evaluate out how many dollars you were spending. And everything was SO expensive. I hate the differences in electrical stuff between the U. S and other countries. This year my laptop's hard drive was fried and I am sure it was something to do with the voltage difference even though I was using a surge protector. Grrrrr... While my poor laptop is in the data recovery shop. I'm using an old Windows 98 laptop and the driver for my digital camera doesn't work on 98 so I can't show you any jaunt photos yet. Once I'm back to normal. I'll post a clump on my website. Finally. I like coming domiciliate and reviewing my move diary (yes. I act notes) and my photos and thinking how lucky I am to be able to tour my favorite city every year. I can't wait to start planning our next move! Candice it sounds like a wonderful move! But I feel your hurt. I do accept Heathrow is the world's worst a rat's nest of congestion and bureaucracy. Your round was a carry-on?? After 2 weeks in the Mediterranean the beat move was the cut trip home - 10 hours from Venice to Atlanta and 5 more hours to San Francisco. Oh and there's jet lag which I can't shake waking up at 3:00 in the morning and falling asleep in the afternoons. But oh those dazzling familiar places like the Parthenon in Athens shining in the noon-day sun and the new places like the Blue Mosque at dusk in Istanbul with the muzzein's calls echoing across the city! They alter it all worth while. My last great trip was to northern England. I flew into Gatwick rented a car and drove around northern England: York. go Howard. Hadrian's protect and Northumerland. Lake Country. Holkham Hall. Derbeyshire and Chatsworth. It was all very wonderful. accept home. Candice! It's way too long since I've been to London but I overlap lots of your likes and dislikes--particularly the transfer evaluate as one of my favorite things to do on a move is obtain :-)--for clothes jewelry books etc.. that aren't available at domiciliate. I also just love walking around (I discovered Shepherd merchandise on my last trip to London thanks to my U. K editor) and visiting familiar places desire Berkeley form and soaking up the atmosphere. And I like going to theater and music events anytime I travel--getting tickets is usual one of the first things I do in planning a trip. Candice it was so fun hooking up in London--we undergo to do it again (hopefully the dollar will alter a little enabling another move for the McCarty's in a couple of years). I had to express emotion when I read Tracy's comment because I used to love to shop in London also but now it is pretty much ridiculous. Even the duty free items at Heathrow were WAY more expensive than they would be in the US. I love to shop but I wasn't tempted to buy anything (other than a couple of souvenir write items and OS maps). I undergo a couple more thumbs drink to add: (1) 3 hours delays stuck ON the cut in Heathrow (2) coming domiciliate with a horrible cold. My biggest thumbs up: having my kids love London almost as much as I do. This was their third measure and they are getting to be London experts. On the first day we arrived we were walking to the furnish from our flat. I was holding hands with my 8 year old daughter and she looked up at me and said. "Mom. I just like London." Doesn't get much better than that. We.
